What does an insurance broker do?
Most people only see the quote at the end. Behind it, a good broker does a surprising amount of work on your behalf — before, during and after the policy is placed.
1. They turn your situation into a risk underwriters want
Underwriters price what they can see. A broker gathers the detail — your turnover, contracts, security controls, claims history and the context behind it — and presents it in the format each underwriter prefers. Two brokers can present the same business and get materially different prices; the difference is how well the risk is told.
2. They approach markets you can't reach
A large share of commercial insurance — Lloyd's syndicates, specialist managing general agents, niche underwriters — is broker-only. Your broker decides which markets to approach, in what order, and how to create competitive tension between them. That ordering and negotiation is experience, not software.
3. They check the wording, not just the price
Two policies at the same price can differ enormously: sub-limits, exclusions, excesses, average clauses, notification conditions. A broker reads the wording against your actual exposures and negotiates amendments. Cheap insurance with the wrong wording is the most expensive insurance of all — you find out at claim time.
4. They manage the policy through the year
New vehicles, new premises, new contracts, staff changes — a broker processes mid-term adjustments, keeps your cover accurate, and flags when a change affects your insurers' terms. An inaccurate policy can give an insurer grounds to reduce or decline a claim, so this housekeeping genuinely matters.
5. They advocate for you at claim time
This is where brokers earn their keep. When a claim lands, your broker helps you present it properly, chases the insurer's loss adjusters, challenges reserve decisions and pushes back on declined claims where the wording supports you. Policyholders with an engaged broker routinely get faster, fuller settlements than those claiming alone.
